Earth~ Third Rock From the Sun

Earth.jpg

Welcome to Earth, or as most of you know it: Home! She is called many things, but my favorite is probably "Big Blue" because of her vast oceans. Earth is the densest of all planets in the solar system, but don't think that means she isn't one smart rock! She is able to do many things that other planets cannot: she sustains life, she makes life, she has weather patterns, and she is highly mobile (just look at all her tectonic plates). And, Earth is no little girl, either; there are only four planets larger than our Mother Earth. Earth has the perfect combination of magnetism that keeps us safe on the ground and blankets (our ozone layer) that keeps us safe from the immense heat of the sun. And, let's not forget our season which are caused by the tilt of the Earth, relative to the sun. Let's see Venus do that!

Distance from the sun: About 150,000,000 km (about 93,000,000 miles).
Distance from Earth: We are already here.
Planetary Make-up: Oxygen, silicon, Iron, Magnesium, Aluminum, Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Nitrogen, Hydrogen, and so much more.
Moons: One moon, and only one moon.
Name of the moons: We call it (you might want to sit down for this)... the Moon.
How the planet got its name: Named after the anglo-saxon word, erda, which means ground or soil.
